Why I created this course

Take a few minutes to get a sense of this course and Kate's why for creating this important curriculum.

Osteoporosis: What You Need to Know

54% of postmenopausal women have low bone mass and 30% have osteoporosis. 40% of women over 50 years of age will have at least 1 osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. If you are a woman, chances are you already are ...or you will be affected by osteoporosis.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • The anatomical structure of your bones and how they change as we age
  • How yoga can improve bone density
  • What types of movements put our bones at risk
  • What to START doing on your yoga mat
  • What to STOP doing on your yoga mat
  • How to incorporate these practices into your daily life and move mindfully both on and off your yoga mat

This course is for anyone who practices or teaches yoga and wants to be sure they are working safely and maximizing bone health.

Suitable for all levels of yogis, including chair yogis.

Yoga Alliance teachers earn 2 CEUs for completing this course.

Meet Your Instructor

Kate Doran opened Savannah Power Yoga in January 2011 with the mission of providing a welcoming space for health and wellness, in community, through through the consistent practice of yoga. Kate had been practicing yoga sporadically since 1998 and found that once she committed to a consistent practice, it changed her life.

Before opening Savannah Power Yoga, Kate taught at a few different locations in Savannah, including the Senior Center on Bull Street. "I developed a 6 week chair-based yoga class in 2009 and it lasted over 10 years." In 2017, she decided to bring senior-focused yoga classes into Savannah Power Yoga and created the Spry Mind+Body methodology. She began training other teachers how to teach a safe and transformational yoga class to older students.

Spry Mind+Body includes chair-based yoga and more traditional mat-based classes and serves a growing community of folks interested in yoga, but in need of a more mindful practice. Spry Mind+Body classes are intelligently designed to improve balance, strengthen the whole body and maintain flexibility and stamina, while also honoring the changes we face as we age.

What Course Graduates Are Saying

I thought the class was outstanding. I learned a great deal and will be much more aware of the risk of rounding the upper back. I will put this class into practice tomorrow! - Cheryl L.

Thank you for the clear explanations of not only what poses are good or not so good for someone with osteoporosis, but the underlying reason why (with info on bone structure). - Mary L.

Kate's tone is clear and informative and, at the same time, warm and friendly. Learning all those things about my aging body was so helpful. I have osteopenia, so this was all important information to learn.  - Carol A.
